that which we call a rose
Feb. 7th, 2008 12:55 pmA meme, because names are interesting, yo: tell us about your username. Where you found it, why you chose it, how much you love and/or identify with it. We choose our names here, which is weird but also very shiny.
I started using "Lotesse" back on the www.theonering.com messageboards when I was, what? twelve? Something like that. One of my favorite names in LotR was, at the time, Lothiriel. She's a bit character, the princess of Dol Amroth who, I think, ends up marrying Eomer. But that name was taken, so I tried switching it to the other Elvish language. "Lothiriel" means "flower-maid" in Sindarin, but I didn't like how it sounded when translated into Quenya. I stumbled on "Lotesse", which in Quenya means "in flower" and is the name of the fifth month of the year. I liked the sound of it, it was close to Lothiriel, and my birthday is in May. And it was available. So I went with that.
Someone else had "Lotesse" when I went for my eljay, so I played around with it and got "lotesseflower." I like how that looks on the screen, and the English bit is sort of a translation of the Elvish part. They just felt like they went together. And lo, so has it been these many years. I love that my handle is Elvish, because Tolkien is the strongest of all my roots, and I like putting that face forward: before anything else, I show myself as a Tolkienist. I also really like the shape of the name - it feels very art deco in my mind, like a Mucha print or something of that sort.
I've never used any other name on the net. I've been Lotesse since I was a little babyfan, and I was Lotesse when I posted my first fic, and I'm still her now. That makes me happy.
Talk about your names! I want to hear your stories.
